Our award winning basketweaver's family in Houmt Souk on the island

of Djerba has spent four generations creating palm baskets.
Further, he has received two medals for his excellence in weaving baskets.

These baskets are created by beating palm leaves until only the fibrous part of the leaf remains.  The fibers then are partially dried then spun and twisted by our weaver's schooled hands into fine rope-like yarn.

The yarns are thickened by either weaving them together to make larger rope or used in thinner form for weaving baskets like the purple and pink basket or the thin shopping basket down below.

Amel proudly displays her father's baskets.
