TUAREG
also known as TOUAREG, TUAREQ & TOUAREQ
|
The Tuareg People inhabit parts of Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Mali. The Tuareg include diverse groups of people sharing a common language and a common history. The dialects of the language vary greatly from area to area based on geographical boundaries. The Tuareg are not generally considered Arabic though many practice some degree of Islam. In years past, the Tuaregs played a primary role in TransSaharan trade through camel caravans. Today most Tuaregs have developed more permanent settlements in the areas their ancestors used to trade. Much of Tuareg art comes in the form of jewelry. Though no two pieces of jewelry are identical there are several basic designs each of which has a different meaning. |
